West Weekly Stay Home Stay Healthy Edition - Week 4
April 15, 2020
Office Hours: There is typically someone in the office Monday-Friday between the hours of 8 am and noon. Many days there is someone there past noon. If you need to get a hold of someone at the school, you can call the school (217-485-3918) or email Mrs. Reichert (reichertl@unity.k12.il.us) or Mr. Fisher (fisherf@unity.k12.il.us).
Remote Learning: As you’ve heard, schools are closed for in person learning until April 30. We have Remote Learning Packets for families to access online or pick up at the following locations:
Tolono: Unity West Elementary School in the file cabinet in front of the school.
Tolono: The office at The Oaks between 1pm and 5pm.
Sadorus: At the town hall building in the maroon newspaper vending machine.
Pesotum: At the lending library next to the town hall on the east side of town.
If you find that the packet folders are empty, please email Mr. Fisher (fisherf@unity.k12.il.us) and he will refill them as soon as he can.
Packets for the week of April 20-24 will be available after 2:00pm on Friday April 17.
Packets can be turned in outside Unity West. There is a marked tub for you to leave your packets. Students are expected to engage with this learning opportunity to the fullest extent they are able. Teachers are reaching out to students at least once a week, please make sure you respond to them. The responses allow the school to do attendance, and allows us to see if there are any needs that families need met. We had a minor issue with storms last week, but we have now secured the turn-in tub. You can also hold on to the packets and turn them in when students return to school.
Each packet includes at least 25-30 minutes of reading, 20-25 minutes of math, and 15-20 minutes of social studies or science. There are additional online resources listed for each subject area as well. The schedule provided is optional and there to provide guidance on the amount of time your child should spend on each activity.
Accelerated Reader is now open for students to test at home. Many have asked and we were able to make the changes at a district level for all students to access Accelerated Reader from home. We have been able to extend the hours it is open, and it should be available at any time. If you have questions about login information, please email your child’s teacher. To access AR click here.
Grab and Go Breakfast and Lunch Schedule: All Unit Seven students are welcome to pick up a grab and go breakfast/lunch combo. All meal pick up is at Unity High school on the east side by the baseball diamond.
Times: 9:30-10:30
Monday April 20 - 2 days worth of meals
Wednesday April 22-3 days worth of meals
Monday April 27-2 days worth of meals
Free and Reduced Lunch Applications: We understand at this time many people are facing very challenging and changing circumstances. Many families are finding more financial difficulty at this time, than they have had at previous times during the school year. If you are in that situation, we invite you to click here to access the Free and Reduced Lunch Application. You can print off the application and fill it out, or you can pick up applications at the same locations where we distribute our Remote Learning Packets. We ask that you return the completed applications to the school 8am and noon. If you can not make those times, please call the school (217-485-3918) or email Mrs. Reichert (reichertl@unity.k12.il.us) to set up a time that will work.
April is Child Abuse Awareness Month: If you know of someone whom is being harmed or hurt during this time you can call:
Child Abuse/Neglect 1(800)-422-4453
Domestic Violence 1(800)-799-7233
For more information, visit CDC Violence Prevention
Spring Pictures and Yearbooks: We are working with Lifetouch to coordinate getting Spring Pictures and Yearbooks delivered. We do not have any additional information at this time, but Lifetouch has assured me all ordered materials will be delivered as conditions permit.
We will continue to update families as we get new or updated information. Feel free to call the school office at 217-485-3918 if you have any concerns or questions.
